About Our Cork Decor:
About Cork Bark
Every 9 years the Cork Oak's bark can be carefully harvested without harming the tree, and is used all over the world for various purposes. All cork is heat treated and phytosanitary certified by importers before it's imported to the USA. It's mold-resistant, long-lasting, and extremely easy to cut & shape for hyper-realistic hardscapes in naturalistic terrariums. With that in mind, Cork Bark is the most popular type of wood decor we work with here at NEHERP. No other wood decor comes close to the versatility cork offers for the price.
About NEHERP's Cork Bark
We source our cork from three separate US-Based importers, based on the quality and purpose of each product category. Upon arriving at NEHERP, all cork is carefully inspected, graded, and sorted onto carefully sealed Douglas Fir (animal safe) rack systems. None of the wood at NEHERP touches concrete, unsealed surfaces, or comes anywhere near any plants or animals in our facility. Our wood stock room is not open to the public, and our staff is trained to prevent cross-contamination in an effort to deliver the absolute best quality wood decor available in the USA.

Cleaning Wood Decor Before Use:
Basic Terrarium Wood Cleaning Info
As noted in our "About Our Decor" info panel, our wood decor is absolutely top-notch in terms of quality & cleanliness. We endeavor to go above and beyond, and offer the absolute best quality wood decor in the USA. That being said, we do recommend cleaning and/or disinfecting wood decor before adding them to your terrarium as an added precaution. Scrubbing and washing wood decor with a brush and water is a good bet for natural decor which can often arrive a bit dusty from storage. For disinfection of small and medium sized decor, boiling them can be a good and simple bet, and is typically the option we use most often in house. When necessary, we'll boil the top half of a piece first, then flip the wood to boil the bottom half later in a very large pot. For larger/thicker pieces, freezing/heating has worked well for peace of mind, too. We'd recommend googling "how to disinfect terrarium woodext. link" for more advice on that end, as baking wood decor can be a dangerous procedure if not done carefully. If your wood decor will be adhered in place using silicone and your method of cleaning moistened the wood decor considerably, we'd recommend leaving it out to dry completely before proceeding.
The boiling/cleaning/sanitizing procedures outlined above should be attempted by adults only, or under close adult supervision.

Hand selected cork flats
▾ Show Description ▾
NEHERP Staff Description:
Cork is a lightweight & highly detailed type of wood which holds up very well in a variety of conditions ranging from ultra dry to ultra humid. It has a bunch of different uses ranging from loose decor to incorporation into fully custom backgrounds. We use Cork in the vast majority of vivariums we build at NEHERP, and Cork Flats are the least expensive option sold by the individual piece. We try to be fairly accommodating with individually purchased cork pieces, so if your cork is for something specific, let us know after you order.

Cork: Modular Planters By NEHERP
Specially selected cork rounds cut perfectly for mounting to backgrounds

A New England Herpetoculture Product:
Our inexpensive modular cork planters allow vivarium builders to add a planting site anywhere they'd like on a background. These are compatible with Cork Tile Backgrounds, Custom Background Kits, and included (at a discount) in our Heavy Duty Background Kits. Depending on the type of background being created, Modular Cork Planters can be attached to an enclosure using either our terrarium-safe silicone or using stainless steel hardware. If silicone is used, any excess "push out" adhesive can be coated with Background Texture Mix to help the planter blend more seamlessly into the background. Both sizes have one opening cut at a 45° angle for easy mounting. Once a planter is mounted it can be left empty to be used as a cave/ledge, or filled with substrate to contain live plants. Over time the roots of plants will grow out & onto the cork itself, creating an awesome grown-in effect. Click here for a bare background fitment photo of the above enclosure.
Cork Rinds
Thinly sliced organic cork bark for microfauna refuges
Shown: A 1lb assortment of cork rinds spanning ~26in!
▾ Show Price & Description ▾
A NEHERP Exclusive Product!
Cork Rinds are thinly sliced terrarium-safe cork bark which are perfect for small enclosures like those used to house isopods, spiders, mantids, etc. The natural textured surfaces provide explorable nooks & crannies for both hiding and feeding. Since they are only 3/8in-7/8in thick on average, they don't take up much vertical space and are light enough to minimize the risks of accidentally crushing microfauna. Each piece is carefully cut in-house with a thickness ranging from 1/8in to 1 1/4in and can easily be broken by hand to fit into any size enclosure. We use them for our isopod cultures as they produce the perfect humid microclimate that the isopods love and they last longer than leaf litter.
Note: These ultra-thin custom-cut cork rinds have 4-6 times more surface area than cork flats per pound. The assortment shown in the image above spans roughly 26in x 14in while weighing just 1lb!

We try to be fairly accommodating with individually purchased cork pieces, so if your cork is for something specific, let us know after you order.
Cork Show Grade
Our highest quality rounds for big enclosures & displays
▾ Show Description ▾
NEHERP Staff Description:
NEW: Since our standard rounds have two new (larger) sizes, we've been able to bump-up our Show Grade Rounds to a massive 24-30in length with your choice of diameter. These are the biggest rounds we've ever made available for shipping, and we're confident you won't be disappointed in the quality. An average show grade round weighs more than twice as much as a standard (4.5in+) diameter round of an identical length. Our Show Grade Rounds are super detailed 24-30+ inch long pieces that are unbeatable for large enclosures & custom background builds. These are the same large rounds you see at expos, without the sky-high price to match. For those working with very large enclosures who are looking to build a cork "tree" in a vivarium, Show Grade Cork Rounds are a great starting place to work off of! Before ordering, please measure your enclosure & consider the dimensions of this wood to ensure an appropriate fit! Most XXL cork rounds which have been sustainably harvested (from any source) will have a seam down one side where it was stretched over the tree's branch for removal. We do our best to ensure our Show Grade Rounds have no significant visual gaps or pieces missing from the sustainable harvest seam.
