Reptile & Amphibian Hides

For Bioactive Terrariums & Live Vivariums

About This Section Hide Section Info Show Item List Hide Item List

A Note Regarding Artificial Hides & Huts

As the years have passed, our company has narrowed it's focus almost exclusively towards living terrarium ecosystems. With that in mind, we've dropped most of the artificial Hides & Huts from our lineup, as we continue to expand our wood decor & live plant selection. Artificial hides can be made to look right in a live vivarium ecosystem, but other times they can look a bit cheesy. Below, we'll briefly run-through our thoughts on the use of artificial hides in living environments.

Where Artificial Hides Are Appropriate

Animal welfare comes before anything else, every time. If an animal's needs can be better met using an artificial hide, by all means do so! Certain Geckos, Snakes, and other terrestrial critters seem to love spending time in their "Rock Cave" (or similar) hide, and we can't argue with an animal's personal preference. :-) Another example would be species which prefer to breed in a specific type of hide. When presented with the option, terrestrial dart frogs (Phyllobates, Dendrobates, etc) almost always choose to breed in Coconut Huts with Petri Dishes beneath them. Lastly, temporary and non-live terrariums are obvious choices for artificial hides.

Where Artificial Hides Aren't Recommended

In many cases, adequate hiding spaces can be provided in a bioactive terrarium by working with appropriately selected live plants or wood decor. Whenever possible, that is our preference. Wood decor can be incorporated into Custom Backgrounds, and those can have multiple little hides built in while maintaining a naturalistic appearance. Live plants can offer natural cover that changes over time, increasing levels of enrichment for the animals in your care. It doesn't take much effort to put a natural hiding spot together, and it's often a more rewarding experience.

Coconut Hut

A hide carved from a coconut shell!

Coconut Hut
▾ Show Description ▾
Coconut huts make great hides for smaller vivarium inhabitants. Standard hut sizes range from 3" to 4.5" in diameter. If kept moist in a live vivarium, moss & other plants can grow up & onto them. While great for a huge variety of different small species, coconut huts are a big favorite with breeders of terrestrial dart frogs which will deposit eggs on the (optional) petri dish!

Exo Terra Caves

The most popular "rock" style caves on the market

Exo Terra Small Cave For Bioactive Terrariums Exo Terra Medium Cave For Bioactive Terrariums Exo Terra Large Cave For Bioactive Terrariums Exo Terra X-Large Cave For Bioactive Terrariums Exo Terra XX-Large Cave For Bioactive Terrariums
▾ Show Description ▾
NEHERP Staff Description:
The new & improved Exo Terra Reptile Caves are here! These have more 3D texture and look much more like rock than before. Rather than being very wide & very shallow like the old style, most of these are deeper (front to back) than they are wide (left to right) which helps to minimize the visual footprint of each cave when viewing the enclosure from the front. That also provides more walking room for the animals outside the cave, considering almost every terrarium is wider than it is deep! We're also happy to see that the new packaging will help protect the caves much better than the old (bubble wrap) style did during transit. The overall dimensions & door size of each cave is listed beneath the add to cart button.
Manufacturer Description:
A proper hiding area is an often-underestimated feature of a natural terrarium. Without a safe spot to hide and sleep reptiles and amphibians will easily develop stress that will affect their activity and appetite. With a realistic pebble design and an enlarged hiding volume, the Exo Terra Reptile Cave mimics natural hiding places of reptiles and amphibians. The Exo Terra Reptile Cave provides shelter as well as offering a cooler and more humid microclimate in your terrarium. The natural rock look will integrate into any type of terrarium.

Exo Terra Tortoise Cave

The perfect hide for a variety of large species

Exo Terra Tortoise Cave
▾ Show Recommendation ▾
NEHERP Staff Description:
This is Exo Terra's biggest hide, and probably the largest realistic looking hide made by any major manufacturer. This was released by Exo Terra along with the other new caves, and it carries the same improved 3D detail & coloration. While called a "Tortoise Cave", it's also a great choice for any larger Reptile or Amphibian which enjoys a place to hide. Dimensions listed below. Due to it's large size and associated shipping costs, we no longer carry this particular cave. Check out the Amazon link below to pick one up.
Manufacturer Description:
The Exo Terra Tortoise Cave was especially designed to provide tortoises with an enlarged hiding space. A proper hiding area is an often-underestimated feature of a natural terrarium. Without a safe spot to hide and sleep tortoises will easily develop stress that will affect their activity and appetite. With its realistic pebble design and large hiding volume the Exo Terra Tortoise Cave mimics the natural hiding places of tortoises. The Exo Terra Tortoise Cave provides shelter as well as offering a cooler and more humid microclimate in your terrarium.

Exo Terra Wet Rock Cave

A realistic rock humid-hide cave with a water bowl basin on top

Exo Terra Wet Rock Cave
▾ Show Description ▾
NEHERP Staff Description
These newer rock caves are made of ceramic and look a bit more realistic than the others Exo Terra makes. The prices are a bit lower too, and the addition of a closed bottom allows us to add things like Sphagnum Moss, Coconut Fiber, or other moisture-holding medium into the cave for use as a "humid hide" by species which would benefit from that. The top of each cave also has a recessed area which can be utilized as a shallow water dish. While ceramic is a great material for moisture-contact, it's a bit more fragile than the other resin hides we carry. No worries, our team will carefully pack these up so they arrive in great shape for you.
Manufacturer Description
The Exo Terra Wet Rock caves supports your reptile with a secure and moist hiding place. A hiding place is ideal for your reptile to be able to hide and sleep. Without a safe spot, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates will easily develop stress that can effect their activity and appetite. Made out of eco-friendly ceramic, the cave retains moisture and helps reduce moisture and temperature fluctuations that can occur and also aids the shedding process. The cave is an ideal egg-laying site and is easy to maintain a humid micro-climate. It is perfect for reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates.

Zilla Rock Lair

Our favorite "Humid Hide" on the market

Zilla Rock Lair Small For Bioactive Terrariums Zilla Rock Lair Medium For Bioactive Terrariums Zilla Rock Lair Large For Bioactive Terrariums Zilla Rock Lair X-Large For Bioactive Terrariums
▾ Show Description ▾
NEHERP Staff Description:
After another major brand changed their rock shelters from durable resin to fragile ceramic, we decided to test a bunch of different alternatives in 2020. The Zilla Rock Lair is our favorite of the bunch, which is why it's our newest option for those looking to add a nice looking cave to their enclosure. It looks great from the outside, and the insides of the cave are nice & smooth, with no sharp edges. There's a nice stepped lip on the floor of each lair, which is perfect for adding a layer of moss or egg laying medium. The top pops off for easy cleaning, and these are made of the durable resin material that we prefer. An excellent choice for a humid hide, egg laying chamber, and more. Sizes listed below the Add To Cart button.
Manufacturer Description:
Humidity is important in helping reptiles shed their skin. When laying eggs, humidity is needed to keep them from drying out and perishing. These naturalistic hideaways provide humidity for your reptiles, as well as a dark den area to feel safe. Designed to keep the humidity from escaping, the large entrance is on the side making it easy for the animal to climb in, allowing for fresh air to be exchanged and help prevent molding. The entrance ramp and wall reduces the amount of light surrounding the animal which mimics a burrow and creates a more secure hiding space. The natural mossy appearance looks amazing and doubles as a rough surface for snakes and geckos to rub against and remove sloughing skin.

NEHERP Recommendation:

Nature knows best.

Examples of natural wood decor hides

There are many situations where artificial hides work great, but for most of our commissioned vivarium work, we rely on natural wood decor instead. Live plants grow better on real decor, and "real" beats "realism" in our opinion. If you'd like to learn more, check out our "About This Section" note at the top of this page.
