Pilea is a widely distributed genre of plants which finds it's home in tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate environments. A handful of Pilea species are commonly kept as decorative houseplants, and a handful are perfectly well suited to a terrarium environment. We consider the majority of the Pilea species we grow to be fairly forgiving & a great choice for a wide range of experience levels.

Pilea At NEHERP
We only work with around 10 types of Pilea, but they are some of the more popular varieties we sell. Most of our Pilea are grown under basic T5HO lighting, with a handful of the more sensitive species being grown under low output custom LEDs. The PAR rating of most of our Pilea growing areas ranges from just 40-65µMol/M²S at plant level, with only a few (early development) racks metering higher. We maintain relative humidity between 65-75%, keep temperatures between 68-85F, and utilize automated misting & watering cycles whenever we can. Pilea seem to thrive with some airflow, so we keep them on the "more windy" shelves & positions throughout our grow rooms. The majority of our available Pilea are simply grown in our specially mixed organic potting soil. The available plants are raised in the mild potting soil and ship before they require additional nutrients, but the mother plant stock we propagate from are fed using extremely mild, balanced, organic nutrients every 2-3 months. That same regimen would likely be a good starting place, if you'll be keeping them as houseplants. Like the overwhelming majority of plants, Pilea grown in live vivariums do not require additional fertilization.

Growing Pilea Plants In A Bioactive Terrarium / Live Vivarium
These plants are pretty forgiving for the most part, but none of the species we grow are especially well suited for enclosures housing larger animals. In general, these plants seem to do best with moderate or higher levels of humidity (65%+ R/H), regular misting, and quick draining substrate. Our Bioactive Substrate Base Kits are a perfect choice for every Pilea species we offer. They don't have especially strong lighting requirements, but will tolerate higher levels well. We've seen some species thrive in as little as 30µMol/M²S PAR at plant level, so even our lowest output Inexpensive CFL Lighting Kits drastically exceed the minimum-end requirements for the majority of Pilea species we offer. These are not slow growing plants for the most part, so occasional pruning will be required.

Plant Size Info

Potted Plants:

Plant nurseries roughly categorize their plants by pot size, and a plant is made available once it has mostly filled out it's container. Generally speaking, a 4in potted plant is roughly twice the size of a 3in pot, and a 3in potted plant is typically twice the size of a 2in pot. Needless to say, we do our best to offer big & healthy plants which were categorized honestly, and are representative of the photos we've got listed on the site. Every potted plant we sell is shipped bare root, and the root ball of the plant is carefully wrapped in paper towels before it's placed back into it's cleaned pot for shipping. From there, it's wrapped in clean brown packing paper and labeled with it's species before shipping.

Live Mats:

Healthy Background Plants For Terrariums

We're proud to offer a brand new way to order plants, and we're loving the results so far. Our Live Mats are grown with plenty of light & the ideal amount of moisture required to form a dense mat. Before shipping, each section is gently separated from it's sealed container, rinsed free of excess potting soil, and carefully placed in a partially inflated airtight bag. Depending on the specific plant, live mats can planted terrestrially or attached to a background to grow epiphytically. These are exceptionally dense portions of plants, so a little can go a long way!

Rooted Portions:

Some plants we grow are offered in rooted portions, which are slightly smaller portions than would typically be included in a 3in pot. The length and overall portion size depends on the species being offered, but these do include a portion of the root system for easy planting & fast acclimation. When it comes time to ship, we'll carefully separate the portion from it's mother plant, rinse the roots free of potting soil, and carefully wrap the roots in a ball of moist paper towels. From there, the plant is wrapped in clean brown packing paper and labeled with it's species before shipping.

Clippings:

Clippings are the smallest size portion of what we offer. Depending on the species, clippings may or may not include small attached roots. Plants we sell as clippings are typically epiphytic in nature, meaning they'll grow without soil on the surface of another plant (or wood decor, backgrounds, etc). The difficulty in planting clippings depends entirely on the species, so don't hesitate to ask before ordering if you are curious. When it comes time to ship, we carefully clean, wrap, and seal our clippings in partially filled bags to ensure the safest transit possible. Like everything else we sell, these are individually labeled with ID.

Aluminum Plant

The leaves of this common species feature a metallic looking pattern, earning it the common name of "Aluminum Plant". Pilea cadierei is very forgiving as a houseplant, and can be grown in a variety of containers. This species can grow fairly quickly in a terrarium environment, but is easily kept in check with occasional pruning. Depending on the situation, this plant can be trained to grow outward by pruning the stem tips, or upward by pruning any unwanted lateral growth.

This common plant is an incredibly forgiving one which quickly grows in a trailing pattern. As a houseplant, Pilea depressa does best mounted in a hanging pot or basket, with it's long stems allowed to grow downward. In an enclosure, the plant will readily grow up & onto any moist surface of wood, rock, or Background Mix without much effort.

Pilea depressa 'Tiny Tears'

Another extremely easy to grow Pilea species which tolerates a wide variety of conditions. Smaller than standard Pilea depressa, Tiny Tears is closer in size to Pilea glauca with very small (1/8in max) green leaves. Easy to propagate from clipping, and grows up and onto just about anything. As a houseplant, this species does best planted in a small hanging pot or basket, but will require a fair amount of humidity & moisture to thrive. In an enclosure, Tiny Tears does great when planted up high & is allowed to trail downward. It can alternatively be planted on the substrate layer, where it'll wander over the surface & climb onto moist decor.

A delicate, beautiful trailing species of Pilea which makes an excellent choice in a wide variety of enclosures. With red stems & blue-green ("Aquamarine") colored leaves, this is a really unique & attractive little plant. When grown as a houseplant, it thrives best in a pot which allows it's stems to hang downward. In an enclosure it can either be planted up high on a background & allowed to trail downward, or down low on the substrate layer where it will creep along the terrarium floor. We've had plenty of luck growing this species epiphytically when humidity stays high, otherwise it can be planted in any well-draining live vivarium substrate with great results. This species is our best selling Pilea.

Pilea involucrata

Friendship Pilea

This is one of the most common species of Pilea on the horticultural market, and is commonly referred to as "Friendship Pilea". Clippings of this plant establish themselves easily & quickly, so it's easy to propagate a couple plants to give to friends! It's leaves are variegated with great looking dark green and silver patterns which grow bolder in ideal conditions. As a houseplant Pilea involucrata is extremely forgiving, and will do well when planted in any typical pot. It's upward growth pattern usually tops out under 12in, and it's watering & lighting requirements are both minimal. In an enclosure we recommend planting this one terrestrially, and allowing for a few inches of growth in every direction. It'll slowly spread outward, so the occasional pruning job will be required. Don't forget that the clippings resulting in pruning this plant are easy to root & make great gifts! :-)

This quick-growing little plant has an especially interesting method of dispersing it's seeds. Flowers of this plant burst, shooting pollen long distances relative to the size of the plant. This shooting effect earned this species it's "Artillery Plant" common name. This species thrives as a houseplant, and is extremely forgiving so long as it's kept relatively moist. In a terrarium environment, this plant tolerates far more dry conditions than the majority of tropical plants we sell. Relative humidity as low as 45% is fairly well tolerated, so long as it's substrate is kept moist. This one is a pretty fast grower, and we wouldn't recommend keeping it in any enclosure where fairly routine maintenance isn't acceptable. Although it can eventually grow upward, it spreads outward more readily in our experience, and is very easy to keep at a fairly low-level when conditions are right. We've seen two plants marketed as Pilea microphylla, and this is the smaller of the two.

This plant's uniquely textured leaves look other-worldly in person. The common name "Moon Valley" stems from the deep bumps in the leaf surface, resembling the cratered surface of the moon. The tops of new leaves can be bronze/copper colored, while mature leaf growth is green around the edges with darker coloration along the veins & towards the center of each leaf. As a houseplant this species does well in any typical pot, and benefits from a saucer underneath to catch excess water & keep humidity high. In dry environments, we've seen this plant benefit from an occasional misting session. In an enclosed environment, this plant thrives with plenty of humidity, and a fair-to-moderate amount of light. It can grow to be a bushy 12in, so occasional pruning will be required in most enclosures.

Pilea Creeping Charlie

Creeping Charlie is a common plant which is tolerant of a wide variety of conditions. It is unrelated to the common weed Glechoma hederacea which shares the same common name. As a houseplant, this species will survive in a wide variety of containers, with hanging pots & baskets being a popular choice. In an enclosure, it can grow to form green walls or carpets if desired. This is the most tolerant Pilea species we carry for use in enclosures housing medium & larger sized species, since it can handle quite a bit of disturbance once it's acclimated to a surface. This is a fast growing plant which is super easy to care for, so plan to do some pruning to keep the plant's growth pattern in check.
