General Vining & Trailing Plant Info
Our "Vines and Trailing Plants" classification applies to any plant which carries a trailing or scandent growth pattern. Trailing plants grow hanging downward, while scandent varieties will grow in an upward pattern. Some are flexible enough to grow either way! Many of these plants are epiphytic (can grow on other plant materials, rather than in soil), although many do best planted directly in substrate.

We work with a wide selection of vines which have an equally wide range of sizes, growth rates, colors, and more. For example, plants like Marcgravia rectiflora are incredibly slow growing & fairly difficult to care for, while plants like Tradescantia zebrina are super forgiving and grow incredibly quickly. A handful of the plants we grow make great houseplants, but many others are pretty much terrarium-specific. Be sure to check out each plant's description for it's specific recommendations. We're proud to say that some of the mother plants in our collection (which we propagate from) have been in our care since before we opened for business! :-)

How We Grow Our Vines & Trailing Plants
Like all of the other plants we propagate in-house, our Vines & Trailing plants are grown in our tightly controlled indoor environments. Incoming air is filtered, water is dechlorinated & filtered down to 5 microns, and our plants are treated to uncommonly organic soils & nutrients. It should go without saying, but no harsh or systemic chemicals are ever used in our grow rooms. Depending on the species, our vines & trailing plants are typically grown under 35-150+µMol/M²S PAR light at plant level. Although many of our plants are epiphytic, we grow (almost) all of our for-sale plants in our in-house blend of nutrient-light organic potting soil. This helps to help minimize transplant shock after delivery, which can be especially rough in certain delicate species. The long-term mother plants we care for are grown with a more nutrient-dense soil, and are fed using ultra-organic nutrients every 2-6 months depending on the plant's individual requirements. That same regimen would likely be a good starting place for your new plants, if you don't plan on keeping them in a vivarium where no additional fertilization should be required.

Growing Vines & Trailing Plants In A Bioactive Terrarium / Live Vivarium
To keep things simple, we can roughly group the plants on this page into three categories based on growth pattern. Scandent, trailing, and those which tolerate being grown either way. Plants labeled as scandent will grow in an upward growth pattern. These plants will do best when planted low towards a background or decor item, and are allowed to grow upward with time. Trailing plants will grow best if allowed to hang downward, so we typically recommend mounting or planting them up high on a background or decor item for best results. Some species can be grown either way, and the majority will also tolerate if allowed to creep along the substrate level. If you'll be mounting a plant to a background or hardscape decor, we recommend checking out our Plant Mounting Kit. (One kit handles many plants!) Most of the plants listed on this page can be trained to grow & grip onto a surface using a variety of different means, so long as that surface is kept moist and the environment remains consistently humid.

Plant Size Info

Potted Plants:

Plant nurseries roughly categorize their plants by pot size, and a plant is made available once it has mostly filled out it's container. Generally speaking, a 4in potted plant is roughly twice the size of a 3in pot, and a 3in potted plant is typically twice the size of a 2in pot. Needless to say, we do our best to offer big & healthy plants which were categorized honestly, and are representative of the photos we've got listed on the site. Every potted plant we sell is shipped bare root, and the root ball of the plant is carefully wrapped in paper towels before it's placed back into it's cleaned pot for shipping. From there, it's wrapped in clean brown packing paper and labeled with it's species before shipping.

Live Mats:

Healthy Background Plants For Terrariums

We're proud to offer a brand new way to order plants, and we're loving the results so far. Our Live Mats are grown with plenty of light & the ideal amount of moisture required to form a dense mat. Before shipping, each section is gently separated from it's sealed container, rinsed free of excess potting soil, and carefully placed in a partially inflated airtight bag. Depending on the specific plant, live mats can planted terrestrially or attached to a background to grow epiphytically. These are exceptionally dense portions of plants, so a little can go a long way!

Rooted Portions:

Some plants we grow are offered in rooted portions, which are slightly smaller portions than would typically be included in a 3in pot. The length and overall portion size depends on the species being offered, but these do include a portion of the root system for easy planting & fast acclimation. When it comes time to ship, we'll carefully separate the portion from it's mother plant, rinse the roots free of potting soil, and carefully wrap the roots in a ball of moist paper towels. From there, the plant is wrapped in clean brown packing paper and labeled with it's species before shipping.

Clippings:

Clippings are the smallest size portion of what we offer. Depending on the species, clippings may or may not include small attached roots. Plants we sell as clippings are typically epiphytic in nature, meaning they'll grow without soil on the surface of another plant (or wood decor, backgrounds, etc). The difficulty in planting clippings depends entirely on the species, so don't hesitate to ask before ordering if you are curious. When it comes time to ship, we carefully clean, wrap, and seal our clippings in partially filled bags to ensure the safest transit possible. Like everything else we sell, these are individually labeled with ID.

Aeschynanthus gracilis

Red Elf Vine

Aeschynanthus gracilis is a trailing plant which seems to tolerate a wide variety of lighting conditions, but it does best with plenty of humidity. It's smaller green leaves & long trailing stems sprout bright red flowers with orange/yellow throats. As a houseplant we recommend planting this species in a hanging pot or basket, allowing it's long stems to trail downward. In a terrarium We've had success planting it in substrate, as well as mounting it epiphytically.

Aeschynanthus lobbianus

Lipstick Vine

This member of the Gesneriad family has green 1.25in ovate leaves, and it's large bright red flowers bloom out of a darker colored calyx. When the flowers first start to appear and before they open, each resembles a stick of lipstick. Like many Gesneriads, the flowers are especially large & showy. As a houseplant, we recommend planting these in a hanging pot or basket. Fertilizing monthly with a heavily diluted, nitrogen-light fertilizer can help encourage flowering. It's especially important to not overdo it with nitrogen if you'll be trying to encourage these to flower more often. (It can build-up in the soil!) If you aren't looking to force these to flower often, we recommend feeding them every 2-3 months with a mild & balanced nutrient mix. If you'll be growing Aeschynanthus lobbianus in a live vivarium environment, this trailing species does best when planted up high on a background. (Additional fertilization isn't generally necessary!) These are usually sold not flowering.

Aeschynanthus longicaulis

Tiger Stripe Vine

This plant belongs to a family of plants called gesneriads. The tops of the leaves are mottled with lime & dark green colors, while the undersides are mottled with deep purple & light green. The plant's ovate leaves can grow upwards of 2in or so in most conditions, and the large flowers are bright yellow with a red/orange throat & a maroon calyx. This one is a slower-grower than some of the more common Aeschynanthus on the market. As a houseplant, it'll do well mounted in a hanging pot or basket so long as there's a fair amount of humidity. In a live vivarium environment, this trailing species does best when it's planted high & allowed to grow downward. It can be grown epiphytically or planted in live vivarium substrate.

Aeschynanthus 'Rasta'

Twisted Lipstick Vine

This lipstick vine seems to grow a bit slower than the others which we grow. It's smaller matte green leaves curl outward, and the stems sprout deep red flowers from maroon calyces. As a houseplant this plant can be planted in a hanging pot in a location which receives partial shade to filtered sun. Soil should be kept moist but not over-saturated. In a terrarium environment we recommend planting this cascading plant up high & allowing it to trail downward.

We purchased a handful of these plants as "Aeschynanthus sp." from a hobbyist grower back in 2015, and we've been working with it ever since. The small leaves range in size from 1/2in to just shy of 1in, making it a very attractive little plant. It's a trailing plant which seems to tolerate a wide variety of lighting conditions, but it does best with plenty of moisture. We don't recommend this one as a houseplant, since it seems to grow best in 65%+ relative humidity. Direct misting is totally fine with this plant! We've had success planting it in substrate, as well as mounting it epiphytically. Unlike most plants we sell, this one is offered without an official ID, so it's especially inexpensive.

Callisia gentlei var. elegans

Striped Inch Plant

Closely related and similar-in-appearance to the Tradescantia we offer, Callisia gentlei is equally easy to work with. Forgiving, fast growing, and a great choice for those with a brown thumb. A perfect houseplant for hanging baskets and decorative pots. It's a little fast growing for use in a terrarium, but it can be done if the frequent plant pruning isn't an issue. Planting this one up high on a terrarium's background will encourage the plant to trail downward for it's most attractive/natural growth pattern. Planted at substrate level it will spread over the ground level, scale decor, and climb upward on moist backgrounds too. Like all Callisia + Tradescantia, we don't include plants which grow this quickly in our Plant Packs.

Callisia repens

Bolivian Inch Plant

Callisia repens is versatile, quick growing, and forgiving. With purple/green lightly fuzzy leaves and deep purple stems, it's no wonder this species is a very popular plant. This is one of the most bulletproof varieties we offer, and is extremely tolerant of a wide variety of conditions. As a houseplant, these will grow best in a hanging pot or basket. They can also be planted in a standard pot, if you don't mind trimming a little more often. In a terrarium, Callisia repens can be planted terrestrially & allowed to creep along the substrate level, up on a background & allowed to trail downward, or down low towards a background to grow upward. A very quick grower.

Please Note:
The most used common name for this plant was "Bolivian Wandering Jew" until recent years. We're no longer using that name, based on recent research regarding potentially anti-semitic origins of the term. Up until recently, we had been under the impression that the name carried a positive or neutral connotation. (i.e. "a resilient plant despite it all") Research seems to point to less-optimistic origins. Some folks have started calling it "Wandering Dude" or "Inch Plant", while others have committed to using the latin name only. Codonanthe devosiana

This awesome uncommon epiphyte from tropical South America is one of our favorite plants currently being propagated at NEHERP. Codonanthe devosiana frequently produces an abundance of bell shaped white flowers which blush pink once mature. It's a fairly slow growing member of the Gesneriad family which prefers high humidity & low to medium amounts of light. As a houseplant, we recommend planting it in a hanging pot or basket & allowing it to trail downward. In a terrarium, this trailing species does best when planted up high on a background, and allowed to drape & spread downward.

Columnea 'Carnival'

(Columnea 'Carnival' is the small-leaved green vining plant with yellow flowers running diagonally upward from left to right!)

There are a lot of "favorite plants" out there, but this one tops Mike's list for easy to grow trailing plants. In ideal conditions, the new growth of this plant can have red hues along the edges of the usually green leaves. The large bright yellow flowers have bright red edges, and this plant isn't shy about flowering fairly often. When it's available, this species is one of our fastest-selling trailing plants. As a houseplant, we recommend planting it in a hanging pot where there's plenty of natural filtered sunlight. In a terrarium, it's an extremely versatile grower which can be planted up high as a trailing plant, or down low as a scandent grower. If planted on substrate level, it will creep around until it finds a surface to grow up & onto. It'll also thrive when planted epiphytically, provided the environment is humid & misted fairly regularly. This plant grows easiest in 70% humidity or higher, with a minimum terrarium humidity range of around 55-60%.

This interesting Gesneriad has small bright green leaves, and grows fairly quickly. The mother plant of the plants we've got available was a gift to us from one of our suppliers back in 2015, and it's proven to be a really nice little vivarium plant. We can't be too specific as to it's native region, but all Columnea are endemic to tropical America. It thrives under bright lighting with plenty of humidity. We haven't grown this one as a houseplant, since we've seen it do best when humidity is kept over 60%. In a terrarium, we recommend mounting it on a background & allowing it to trail downward. If humidity is high & the plant has access to regular misting, it can be grown epiphytically without much of a fuss. Since these are offered without an official species ID, they are nice & inexpensive option!

A member of the Commelinaceae family of flowering plants, sharing some relation to the more common Tradescantia & Callisia plants. The fuzzy deep green leaves of this plant are purple underneath, and grow slightly curled. Like it's cousins, Cyanotis beddomei grows tolerates a wide variety of both lighting & substrate conditions, but doesn't grow as quite as quickly. As a houseplant, this is typically grown in hanging baskets or pots. The Teddy Bear Vine seems to tolerate short periods of dryness better than many plants we carry. In a terrarium, it's a suitable choice for vivarium dwelling species of a variety of different sizes.

Cyanotis somaliensis is an interesting plant with fuzzy green leaves. Although it's technically a tropical species, this plant seems to tolerate slightly less humid conditions than the majority of plants we grow. Magenta flowers sprout occasionally. As a houseplant, we typically see this species in hanging pots or baskets which are allowed to dry slightly before watering. In a terrarium environment, we recommend placing it out of any direct path of frequent misting. This plant tolerates heat, but requires some humidity to thrive.

This plant features bright green ~1in leaves which bend backwards slightly as they grow. In ideal conditions with bright lighting, the edges of the leaves can display more of a red hue. As a houseplant, this species does best in a hanging pot or basket in partial shade or filtered sun. In a terrarium, we recommend planting it up high and allowing it to trail downward. It can also be mounted as an epiphyte in humid conditions if they'll be misted periodically.
Special Note: We originally received this plant in early 2018 as part of a trade, and it's been a source of contention within the team ever since. Some sources say it's latin name is Dischidia oiantha, but it's leaves seem to grow a bit larger by comparison, and the shape seems a bit different as well. (Photo) It's possible it's an age-related size discrepancy, but if you've got solid info on this, please let us know. For now we're keeping the plants separate until we know for sure. The available plants are the offspring of the Dischidia 'Geri' plant we received in early 2018.

Watermelon Vine / Watermelon Hoya

This uncommon epiphytic plant is a favorite within the terrarium plant enthusiast community. The roughly 1in leaves of this plant carry a watermelon-like pattern which looks awesome in person. In ideal conditions with bright light, the green coloration can brighten to a light red, while the plant will turn mostly green in conditions which aren't bright enough. We've seen it grown as a houseplant in hanging pots & baskets, but it seems to be especially popular in terrariums. We recommend mounting these epiphytically up high and allowing them to trail downward. In humid environments, the root systems will quickly spread to surrounding decor & make for an awesome display once grown-in.

This popular epiphytic vine is a fairly slow grower. It's leaves are deep green and grow in a cordate (heart) shape, with a tip which isn't especially sharp. This highly sought after blue-green colored vining plant grows to epic proportions. Easy to train for larger terrariums, but truly awesome for use as a houseplant. The mature form of this plant has fenestrated leaves (holes) which combined with the blue-green hue look absolutely stunning. Best of all, it's nearly as easy as standard Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) to care for, which is a pretty unusual statement for a "rare" species!

This plant does best in a humid environment, and it's soil/substrate must never be allowed to dry out. As a houseplant, it'll do best in a hanging pot or basket grown in partial shade to filtered sun. In an enclosure, this plant will eagerly grow to cover a background or vivarium decor item, and is likely to require regular trimming once acclimated due to it's extremely quick and fairly aggressive growth pattern. This one can get a little out of hand if it's left to it's own devices and not pruned! Recommended for enclosures with 65% minimum relative humidity.

This is a harder to find miniature cultivar of the far more common Ficus pumila plant. This one is a slower growing creeper which forms dense mats over time. As a houseplant this variety is typically grown in hanging pots or baskets which must be kept moist, and do best in more humid conditions when possible. It's lighting requirements range from filtered sunlight to partial shade. In a terrarium, we've had the most luck mounting these plants on backgrounds & other decor, and allowing them to follow their natural dense mat over time. The results are spectacular, and it's growth rate is much more manageable than it's larger Ficus pumila relative!

This is a harder to find miniature cultivar of the far more common Ficus pumila plant. It's leaves are even smaller than the 'Minima' cultivar, and it's creeping mat-forming growth pattern is exceptionally manageable with only occasional pruning. We don't see this plant often kept as a houseplant since it seems to do best with high humidity, but it would be well suited to a hanging pot or basket so long as it's kept moist. It's lighting requirements range from filtered sunlight to partial shade. In a terrarium, we've had the most luck mounting these plants on backgrounds & other decor, and allowing them to follow their natural dense mat over time. The results are spectacular for anyone looking for a green living wall, or a vine-covered piece of wood/rock decor. Recommended for enclosures with 70% minimum relative humidity.

Another beautiful creeping ficus plant which grows in a shingling pattern which tightly clings to the mounting surface. An absolutely excellent choice for anyone looking for a less expensive, easier to grow plant in place of Marcgravia. Can be grown epiphytically in humid terrariums or planted in substrate. At NEHERP, we use this most frequently on custom backgrounds & moist wood decor. This is definitely a terrarium-specific plant which won't thrive easily as a houseplant. Humidity is key!

Ficus vaccinioides

This rarer relative of Creeping Fig is a little easier to manage. The leaves are lanceolate rather than ovate like F. pumila, and this plant can produce little berries on rare occasion. Ficus vaccinioides seems to grow a couple inches upward before arching downward when planted in a hanging basket. In a terrarium environment this versatile grower can be planted up high & allowed to trail downward, or down low & allowed to climb upward. In either case, the plant is able to form fairly dense mats, achieving the popular "green wall" effect in ideal humid conditions. Like the other creeping Ficus species we carry, this one's soil/substrate must never be allowed to dry out. This one can get a little out of hand if it's left to it's own devices and not pruned! Once mature, this plant can throw awesome looking white & pink flower clusters if kept near bright light with available nutrients. As a houseplant, this is commonly grown in hanging plants & baskets. In a terrarium, this hardy species is most commonly planted up high & allowed to trail downward. The plants woody stems are fairly slow growing, but are extremely resilient when housed with larger inhabitant species. We've seen this plant grown epiphytically, but it seems to do best when simply grown in substrate. If the humidity of your environment is over 75% continuously and a moderate amount of misting is available, epiphytically mounting this plant may be another option.

Detailed, intricate patterns on each of the small (1/2-3/4in) leaves make this plant a beautiful addition to any collection. Tolerates a wide variety of lighting & humidity, but thrives with plenty of both. Once mature, this plant can throw awesome looking cream & pink flower clusters if kept near bright light with available nutrients. As a houseplant, we recommend starting these in a smaller pot, and eventually repotting into a larger container. In a terrarium we suggest planting this trailing plant up high, and allowing it to trail & grow downward for best results. We've found that the plant grows faster as it matures & spreads.

Marcgravia rectiflora

Marcgravia rectiflora is one of the rarer plants we work with, and each (8-14 leaf) plant clipping we offer took a few months to grow. These are not typically kept as houseplants, since they do best with higher levels of humidity. Planting/mounting them on moist sphagnum to encourage growth is the most proven & reliable practice, although mounting them to usually-moist backgrounds or wood decor works too if automated misters are used to ensure they never dry out. We recommend keeping humidity pretty high (75%+) with this tropical Central American species, since periods of complete dryness aren't well tolerated. This plant prefers to grow upward toward light, so mounting them lower on a background is good practice. Once they establish themselves (acclimate), the growth rate increases drastically. We consider this a slightly more difficult plant than the majority of vining species we offer, but it's one of the easiest Marcgravia species to care for.

Microgramma species are slow growing tiny epiphytic ferns which require high humidity to thrive. When mounted to a background or wood decor, these will slowly spread along a fuzzy rhizome. Microgramma can really bring thigs like Ghostwood & Cork-heavy custom backgrounds to life, as the plant spreads fine green leaves all along the suface of the surrounding decor. This species is not forgiving, and requires adequate levels of humidity (70%+) and light (~50µMol/M²S+ PPFD) to thrive.

Monstera siltepecana is a somewhat rare slower-growing vine which is endemic to Ecuador. It's immature phase features 3-4in leaves with a blue/green metallic hue which look awesome in person. In our experience, the plant will grow perpetually in it's immature phase if kept in a terrarium, which is ideal considering the leaf size. In it's mature phase, this plant's leaves grow far larger, slide into a darker green, and develop "Swiss Cheese" holes. Our Monstera siltepecana mother plant has reached over 12ft long between propagation sessions, and we've still never had the pleasure of seeing it's mature form. This unique trailing plant is endemic to tropical Brazil. As a houseplant, this species is typically grown in a hanging basket with access to partial shade or filtered sun. In a terrarium, it's woody stems make this plant a little more difficult to train than the trailing plants of similar appearance which we offer, but the frequent bright orange flower production makes it worth the effort! Stems are lined with 3/8-5/8in glossy leaves which give this plant an easy to identify appearance. It can be grown epiphytically, but we only recommend doing so in enclosures with average relative humidity conditions over 75%. Does best in relatively high humidity, with direct misting being well tolerated.

This plant's uniquely patterned green & deep green leaves make it really stand out. The undersides of the leaves display a deep red hue through the veins. As a houseplant, these can be grown in fairly humid & warm areas under partial to full shade. Hanging pots or baskets are an appropriate choice, but they are far easier to grow in a terrarium in our experience! In it's natural setting, these are understory dwelling plants. Higher humidity is mandatory with this species, as lower humidity will cause drying out & discoloration of the leaves. This plant benefits from direct misting, and should be planted in a fairly dim or shaded location for best growth. These can either be allowed to simply creep along a terrarium's substrate level, or mounted up higher and encouraged to trail downward.

The shiny deep & bright green leaves of this plant can also show a red hue on new growth when grown in good conditions. It requires fairly high humidity to thrive, so growing this one as a houseplant is a little tricky. If you'll be keeping this one in a hanging pot, we recommend ensuring the soil never dries out and giving it access to partial shade or filtered sun for best results. Otherwise, this species is best suited to most tropical terrarium conditions. The waxy, brightly colored 1-1.75in leaves make for a really great looking species. In our experience it does best under fairly bright light, so long as there's plenty of humidity as well. These can either be allowed to simply creep along a terrarium's substrate level, or mounted up higher and encouraged to trail downward.

Peperomia emarginella 'Ecuador' is an extremely delicate & uncommon plant endemic to (you guessed it!) Ecuador. This plant is a relatively slow grower for us, and it's also pretty difficult to propagate due to it's ultra-tiny stems. It will grow to form a living mats when conditions are right. We recommend keeping it in fairly high humidity for best results, and be sure to offer plenty of light to ensure the plant can keep it's attractive patterning on the leaves. In a terrarium it'll grow epiphytically or terrestrially, but we think gently mounting it on a background as an epiphyte looks best. This one is not recommended to be kept as a houseplant, since it's humidity requirements are high and it's prone to dessication if allowed to dry out for long.

Peperomia prostrata

This is one of the more sought-after Peperomia species in the live vivarium hobby. It's native to tropical South America, and it's delicate trailing pattern makes it an excellent vivarium plant. The tiny (~1/8-3/8in) leaves of this species have awesome patterns with colors which brighten or fade depending on the conditions. In our experience higher amounts of PAR (75+µMol/M²S) in higher humidity (75% R/H) allows the plant to present with it's boldest coloration & quickest growth. As a houseplant kept in a hanging basket or pot, it's higher humidity requirements can require a little extra care (misting) than some of our other Peperomia. This is one of the more difficult of the usually easy to grow Peperomia species we offer, and isn't available often. Does best when planted up high and is allowed to hang & trail downward. Tolerates low to moderate amounts of light, and does best with moist soil.

Native to Jamaica, Peperomia rubella is a humidity loving species which does best with plenty of humidity. This popular species of Philodendron is native to much of Central + South America including (as you may have guessed), Brazil. The yellow variegation helps this plant stand out from the common all-green Philodendron scandens variety. This trailing plant is incredibly easy to care for, and is a very forgiving choice for growers of any experience level. As a houseplant, it's typically grown in a hanging pot or basket. This species tolerates anything from shade to filtered sunlight. In a terrarium environment, we recommend planting it high on a background or other decor, and allowing it to trail downward. It's fairly quick growth will require some pruning from time to time.

Photos don't do this plants color & texture justice. It's leaves feature a unique velvet like sheen, and brighter red/bronze hues become notable in ideal conditions with plenty of light & humidity. The underised of the leaves range from bronze to nearly purple in some conditions. This trailing plant is fairly easy to care for, so long as it's moisture levels are met. As a houseplant, it's typically grown in a hanging pot or basket. This species tolerates anything from shade to filtered sunlight. In a terrarium environment, we recommend planting it high on a background or other decor, and allowing it to trail downward. It's fairly quick growth will require a some pruning from time to time.

Philodendron ornatum

Velvet Leaf Philodendron

▾ Show Plant Description ▾

This rare & slower-growing species of Philodendron has been growing in our shop for years, and isn't something we're able to offer often. It is native to tropical Brazil and has high humidity requirements, so it's not recommended for use as a houseplant. It's immature form is ideal for terrariums, and produces bluish-green uniquely patterned shiny leaves along it's long trailing stems. It's mature form with larger & wider leaves is unlikely to happen in a smaller terrarium, but photos of this plant in-situ look spectacular. In our grow room, the mother plant of the individuals available here has reached over 14ft long, and climbed two levels of grow racks. Our experience points towards this species having a fairly wide tolerance of lighting conditions. This species can technically be planted up high & allowed to trail, but we think it looks best as a climber (planted low).

This is the bright neon green variety of the more common Philodendron scandens vine. It's origin plant is native to much of Central + South America, and the Neon variety is equally easy to care for. We recommend this plant to horticultural & herpetocultural enthusiasts of any experience level. As a houseplant, it's typically grown in a hanging pot or basket. This species tolerates anything from shade to filtered sunlight. In a terrarium environment, we recommend planting it high on a background or other decor, and allowing it to trail downward. This isn't a great choice for a smaller enclosure, but it's a great selection for those housing Gecko & Frog species which love to climb on leaves. It's fairly quick growth will require some pruning from time to time in any case.

This common plant is an incredibly forgiving one which quickly grows in a trailing pattern. As a houseplant, Pilea depressa does best mounted in a hanging pot or basket, with it's long stems allowed to grow downward. Another extremely easy to grow Pilea species which tolerates a wide variety of conditions. Smaller than standard Pilea depressa, Tiny Tears is closer in size to Pilea glauca with very small (1/8in max) green leaves. Easy to propagate from clipping, and grows up and onto just about anything. As a houseplant, this species does best planted in a small hanging pot or basket, but will require a fair amount of humidity & moisture to thrive. In an enclosure, Tiny Tears does great when planted up high & is allowed to trail downward. It can alternatively be planted on the substrate layer, where it'll wander over the surface & climb onto moist decor.

A delicate, beautiful trailing species of Pilea which makes an excellent choice in a wide variety of enclosures. With red stems & blue-green ("Aquamarine") colored leaves, this is a really unique & attractive little plant. When grown as a houseplant, it thrives best in a pot which allows it's stems to hang downward. In an enclosure it can either be planted up high on a background & allowed to trail downward, or down low on the substrate layer where it will creep along the terrarium floor. We've had plenty of luck growing this species epiphytically when humidity stays high, otherwise it can be planted in any well-draining live vivarium substrate with great results. This species is our best selling Pilea.

Creeping Charlie is a common plant which is tolerant of a wide variety of conditions. It is unrelated to the common weed Glechoma hederacea which shares the same common name. As a houseplant, this species will survive in a wide variety of containers, with hanging pots & baskets being a popular choice. In an enclosure, it can grow to form green walls or carpets if desired. This is the most tolerant Pilea species we carry for use in enclosures housing medium & larger sized species, since it can handle quite a bit of disturbance once it's acclimated to a surface. This is a fast growing plant which is super easy to care for, so plan to do some pruning to keep the plant's growth pattern in check.

Rhaphidophora cryptantha Terrarium Plant For Sale

Rhaphidophora cryptantha is a rare shingling plant which eagerly grows up & onto moist vertical surfaces. It's leaves conform to the growth surface, and only grow to full size (1.5-3in) once the plant has successfully gripped to something. Each leaf has a silver metallic vein structure which looks awesome in person. This is one of the slower growing plants we work with, with every available specimen being at least 3 months old since propagation. While we grow them in soil at the shop, they'll also do especially well when grown epiphytically in a terrarium environment. This species is not recommended for beginners, or for use in vivariums containing a medium (or larger) sized animal. Availability varies, and may include 6in unrooted clippings, unmounted 3in pots, and 3in pots with an animal-safe wood mount. If transferring a mounted plant, please be extra careful to not damage any of the plant's gripping roots in the process for best results.

This larger-leafed trailing plant has green satin textured leaves mottled with shiny silver markings. As a houseplant, it can be easily grown in a hanging pot or basket exposed to indirect sunlight. Lower light is tolerated, but the color & patterns on the leaves won't be as pronounced. In a terrarium environment, we recommend planting this species up high & allowing it to trail downward. Slower growing than some of the similar-sized options. Tolerates being planted in enclosures containing fairly large inhabitant species.

This plant was originally classified as Helxine soleirolii, but is now called Soleirolia soleirolii. An interesting plant that will thrive terrestrially or aquatically. This is not commonly kept as a houseplant, due to it's high humidity requirements. A great choice for the border of a water feature. Each tiny leaf is only about 1/16"-1/8" of an inch across, making for a very intricate ground cover for smaller species. Not suggested for use in vivariums housing larger species, due to the plant's delicate nature. Recommended for environments which will average at least 65-70% relative humidity. Tolerates moderate to bright lighting.

The ovate, shiny green leaves of this plant quick growing plant typically stay around 1-2.25in long. Three-petaled white flowers will pop up occasionally if it's allowed to grow-out for awhile. As a houseplant, we recommend planting it in a hanging pot or basket. It'll tolerate anything from filtered sunlight to deep shade, so it's a really versatile & forgiving species to work with. We recommend pruning any dead growth expeditiously, since it can cause issues in the long run. In a terrarium, it can form a green wall or carpet after not much time, but will require pruning much more often than any of the slower-growing options out there. Interminable pruning of growth should be expected regardless of enclosure size for this extremely fast going plant. At NEHERP, we use this plant most often in grow out & temporary enclosures, since a little portion will go a long way in not much time.

Purple Inch Plant

The deep purple & greenish silver striped coloration of this plant is awesome in person, and it's hues become bolder in ideal growing conditions. Native to tropical Central + South America, Tradescantia zebrina grows extremely quickly in higher levels of humidity, and is incredibly easy to care for. As a houseplant, we recommend growing it in a hanging pot or basket, since it's trailing growth will quickly overgrow any typical tabletop pot. All of the plants we ship are pulled from hanging baskets at NEHERP, since caring for such a fast-growing plant in 3in Pot Equiv.s (like we do most other plants) just wouldn't adequately keep up with this plant's growth rate. As you may have guessed, this plant will grow incredibly quickly in a humid terrarium environment. We don't recommend it for long-term enclosures, unless you don't mind very frequent pruning sessions. From our experience, this plant's most useful terrarium applications include things like temporary quarantine & grow-out enclosures, where the need for quick growth outweighs the ease of long-term maintenance. In the amount of time it took you to read this description, we've grown roughly 2 more linear feet of Tradescantia zebrina at NEHERP. :-)

This Burgundy cultivar is an especially classy variety of the Tradescantia zebrina plant. This one is just as forgiving & easy to grow as the standard variety, only with a deeper purple/burgundy hue in the leaves. As a houseplant, we recommend growing it in a hanging pot or basket, since it's trailing growth will quickly overgrow any typical tabletop pot. Hoya carnosa

Hoya carnosa (and it's variegated cultivar) is probably the most common species of Hoya in the horticultural industry. It's an extremely forgiving, reasonably slow growing plant. Once mature, this plant can throw awesome looking white & pink flower clusters if kept near bright light with available nutrients. As a houseplant, this is commonly grown in hanging plants & baskets. In a terrarium, this hardy species is most commonly planted up high & allowed to trail downward. The plants woody stems are fairly slow growing, but are extremely resilient when housed with larger inhabitant species. We've seen this plant grown epiphytically, but it seems to do best when simply grown in substrate. If the humidity of your environment is over 75% continuously and a moderate amount of misting is available, epiphytically mounting this plant may be another option.

The ovate, shiny green leaves of this plant quick growing plant typically stay around 1-2.25in long. Three-petaled white flowers will pop up occasionally if it's allowed to grow-out for awhile. As a houseplant, we recommend planting it in a hanging pot or basket. It'll tolerate anything from filtered sunlight to deep shade, so it's a really versatile & forgiving species to work with. We recommend pruning any dead growth expeditiously, since it can cause issues in the long run. In a terrarium, it can form a green wall or carpet after not much time, but will require pruning much more often than any of the slower-growing options out there. Interminable pruning of growth should be expected regardless of enclosure size for this extremely fast going plant. At NEHERP, we use this plant most often in grow out & temporary enclosures, since a little portion will go a long way in not much time.
