About Our Lighting Supplies:

Certain animals require UVB light to naturally process vitamin D3, but the actual environments we build (i.e. plants) do not require UVB light to thrive. Plants require PAR light (photosynthetically active radiation), which is measured between 400-720nm, while UVB light is measured between 290-320nm. If the inhabitant species you care for will benefit from UVB lighting, you should offer a UVB basking spot. If the animal(s) you are working with don't require or benefit from light in the UVB spectrum, your environment won't require it either. The UVB light you choose will depend on your animal species.

Why we recommend Zoo Med UVB Bulbs

Zoo Med sets the standard for Reptile UVB lighting, and their user reviews are sky-high by comparison to other mainstream brands. Our recommendation goes a step further than that, though. While no manufacturer seems to print color temperature on their product packaging, Zoo Med's bulbs appear closer to the recommended 5000-6500K color temperature range than other brands. (Seen in the photo above) An appropriate color temperature like this one plays a big part in how naturally accurate a live vivarium will appear to the human eye. It's just an aesthetic observation, but that's important when we're working with a beautiful living environment. While many brands of UVB light will work, Zoo Med's bulbs will work and produce naturally accurate light for a live vivarium. :-)

NEHERP Staff Note About UVB:
Ultraviolet B light is a type of radiation which assists many species in the natural creation of vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 assists in strengthening bones, metabolizing calcium, and helps prevent certain problems associated with keeping Reptiles in captivity. Not all Reptile species will require a UVB light, so it's important to do your research before selecting a UVB light source. It's important to note that UVB light is not necessary for plant growth or health, and only needs to be provided if the animal species will benefit from it. For the best information regarding your specific animal species and it's potential for requiring UVB light, we recommend Googling "(Your Species) + UVB Requirements".

Zoo Med sets the standard in herp-hobby UVB producing bulbs. A few hobbyist-driven UVB comparisons showed Zoo Med's UVB products outperformed other major brand names for UVB output, and we're big fans of the ReptiSun line at NEHERP. On a visual (not related to UVB) note,the "cool" color temperature of Zoo Med's UVB Bulbs appears to fall somewhere between our recommended range of 5000-6700K, while other brands look far more yellow (less natural) for a live vivarium environment. Rated for 5% UVB output, and 30% UVA output.

Selecting A Fixture:
For most bioactive live vivariums, a UVB light source is added as a supplement to the lighting used to illuminate the enclosure. Everything in this paragraph assumes you'll be using one of our Vivarium Lighting Kits or recommended alternatives! If your enclosure is 12-13in deep (front to back), we'd recommend using a simple 12in terrarium hood. Enclosures of these dimensions are too shallow to fit a deep dome fixture along with an appropriate vivarium lighting solution. Exo Terra and Zoo Med both have great options, and we recommend matching the fixture to your enclosure when possible. Aquariums can use either fixture brand, but Zoo Med's is thinner and easier to fit! Both Zoo Med and Exo Terra enclosures are designed to fit two of their corresponding fixtures on top, so it'll look nice and perform well! Enclosures which are 18in or deeper (front to back) can utilize a simple Deep Dome Fixture which will reflect the optimum amount of light into the enclosure while keeping costs as low as possible. For other applications, don't hesitate to reach out via email for advice! For almost all enclosures, we typically add the UVB-containing fixture towards the background where the animal is most likely to bask. Placing your plant-growth lights towards the front will also encourage plants to grow towards the viewer, which looks great once things mature.

Sunblaster is our newest commercial-grade T5HO fixture. Their exclusive NanoTech reflector has a unique shape not found in most of the generic T5HO clones on the market, and the fixture itself features a slightly different & more sleek profile overall. This reflector is advertised to project a unique 103° pattern while capturing 99.9% of previously lost light. Another cool feature is the fact that we're able to daisy-chain up to eight units together using the included daisy chain cables. Hanging clips are included, but we strongly recommend our NEHERP Terrarium Light Stands for this fixture if you'll be using them over a terrarium. These include excellent plant growth bulbs, but for those whose animals need UVB output, Zoo Med's awesome German-made UVB Bulbs are an available upgrade in the cart! T5HOs have always been high on our list of recommended inexpensive lighting solutions, but Sunblaster T5s have always had a drawback since the fixtures aren't flat on the bottom. This always required users to hang them from something above. To help overcome that issue, we developed nifty adjustable NEHERP Lighting stands which make installation super easy. Simply select the angle of illumination you'd like (0°, 15°, 30°) based on the specifics of your particular enclosure's design, and place the T5HO toward the front of the enclosure for best results. Once installed, the stand will elevate the fixture slightly for improved airflow & increased heat dissipation, and allow for the perfect angle of illumination. The Exo Terra Compact Top Canopy is a compact fluorescent terrarium canopy designed for use with Exo Terra Glass Terrariums, but can be used for a wide variety of enclosures. This easy-to-install canopy accommodates compact fluorescent bulbs, LEDs, and even low wattage incandescent bulbs. Hoods 12" smaller have 1 on/off light switch, and larger hoods have 2. Max CFL bulb wattage: 26W. Max incandescent bulb wattage: 25W.

Fitment Information
The versatility of these fixtures is part of why we like them so much. Every Exo Terra Natural CFL, UVB CFL, and Plant Growth CFL (up to 26W) we carry will fit into every Exo Terra Compact Top. When it comes to LEDs, every one of our Jungle Dawn & Value Grow horizontal LEDs (under 7.5in) will fit, too! Never mix CFL bulbs and LEDs in a single fixture, since doing so will cause the LED(s) to overheat.

NEHERP Staff Description
This lamp stand features adjustable height, adjustable length, bendable wire-holding clips, and an all-metal construction. We've used these stands over terrariums, small-scale plant propagation projects, and on tabletop displays. They are great for suspending specialty lamps (UVB / LED Grow / Etc) over a desired surface, and the sturdy metal base holds everything tightly. The stand is adjustable in two directions from 20-38in tall, and 8-15in deep. Everything locks in place with metal-on-metal screws for a secure hold. We tried a couple of other types of stand (adhesives, plastics, and smaller bases), but this relatively old-school option remains our top choice.

Zoo Med is the originator & innovator of the Deep Dome Fixture in this hobby. Between the brightly reflective inside, rugged black outside, and long-term proven reliability, we're glad to carry the whole line of Zoo Med Dome fixtures. The Mini & Standard Deep Dome Models are great for everything from Mercury Vapor Bulbs, Compact Fluorescent Bulbs, Ceramic Heat Emitters, Infrared Heat Projectors, UVB Bulbs, and of course traditional heat (incandescent) bulbs. The new "Nano" models are ideal for very small enclosures (or small areas to heat) when used in conjunction with low wattage nano bulbs. There's a separate cord and switch for every socket on each of these models, making them perfect for use with basic timers, thermostats, and more. Wattage ratings and dimensions for each model listed below the Add To Cart button. The oldest Zoo Med Deep Domes currently being used at NEHERP date back to the year 2000, back when the owner was still a high-school aged hobbyist. These are the absolute highest quality dome fixtures on the market.

Zoo Med Terrarium Hoods

NEHERP Staff Description:
Zoo Med's terrarium hoods are made from a durable glossy black plastic which is thicker than most alternatives. Thanks to the heavier-duty components, these are the only horizontal hoods we carry which can support incandescent bulbs (up to 60W)! Their relatively thin footprint (front to back) makes them extremely useful for a variety of enclosure types and sizes, although they were specifically designed to fit perfectly on Zoo Med's Naturalistic Terrariums. The 12in models have one socket and one switch. The 18in models have two sockets and two switches. Both use a single plug.

Fitment Information:
These fixtures can support incandescent bulbs up to 60W and CFLs up to 26W with ease. The 12in model fits all Jungle Dawn & Value Grow Horizontal LEDs we carry up to 7.5in. If you'd like to use LEDs on the 18in model, it's important to use one (short) 9W Jungle Dawn in the shorter-socket, since the longer Jungle Dawn & Value Grow LEDs won't fit due to the hood's offset-socket setup. The larger side can fit the longer (up to 7.5in) LEDs without issue. If you'll be using an incandescent bulb and a CFL together in an 18in fixture, it's important to note that only Zoo Med's Reptisun UVB CFLs are the only ones in our lineup marketed for that purpose. Never mix LEDs with Incandescent or CFL bulbs in a single fixture since doing so will cause the LED to overheat.
