About Ghostwood
Ghostwood is a US-sourced natural type of sandblasted wood which grows in truly spectacular patterns. Ghostwood is dense enough to last long-term even in the most humid enclosures, accepts epiphytic plant growth with ease, and is our top-choice for focal-point wood in the hardscape backgrounds we've designed for Zoos and Museums. We source our cork from two suppliers, based on the quality and purpose of each product category.
About NEHERP's Ghostwood
Our "NEHERP Grade Ghostwood" is of stupendous quality, costs us a bit more, and offers over-the-top visual impact for exhibit level enclosures. Due to overwhelming demand and there being just one supplier being able to meet our standards, NEHERP Grade Ghostwood occasionally sells out for weeks at a time. With abundant laterals and excellent fine details in the twisted wood branches, no other type of Ghostwood comes close in terms of visual impact. Most of the wood pictured above is NEHERP Grade, for reference.
The newest grade of Ghostwood Branch is referred to as "Pet Grade", which is similar to what would be sold at most other specialty shops. These are priced extremely competitively while still offering a professional level of visual impact. The biggest difference with this grade is fewer laterals, and a more solid appearance up close. For many applications and purposes, this is the ideal choice of wood decor.
Like much of our wood, all pieces are graded and shaped in-house to ensure consistency. Pieces we receive which wouldn't meet our stringent qualifications for "Pet Grade" or "NEHERP Grade" branches are milled-down to our "Straight", "Wye", and "Accent" items. These are each sold at a significant discount, but are also incredibly useful in terrarium background design.
Like all of our wood decor, all pieces are carefully inspected, graded, and sorted onto carefully sealed Douglas Fir (animal safe) rack systems. None of the wood at NEHERP touches concrete, unsealed surfaces, or comes anywhere near any plants or animals in our facility. Our wood stock room is not open to the public, and our staff is trained to prevent cross-contamination in an effort to deliver the absolute best quality wood decor available in the USA.

Cleaning Wood Decor Before Use:
Basic Terrarium Wood Cleaning Info
As noted in our "About Our Decor" info panel, our wood decor is absolutely top-notch in terms of quality & cleanliness. We endeavor to go above and beyond, and offer the absolute best quality wood decor in the USA. That being said, we do recommend cleaning and/or disinfecting wood decor before adding them to your terrarium as an added precaution. Scrubbing and washing wood decor with a brush and water is a good bet for natural decor which can often arrive a bit dusty from storage. For disinfection of small and medium sized decor, boiling them can be a good and simple bet, and is typically the option we use most often in house. When necessary, we'll boil the top half of a piece first, then flip the wood to boil the bottom half later in a very large pot. For larger/thicker pieces, freezing/heating has worked well for peace of mind, too. We'd recommend googling "how to disinfect terrarium woodext. link" for more advice on that end, as baking wood decor can be a dangerous procedure if not done carefully. If your wood decor will be adhered in place using silicone and your method of cleaning moistened the wood decor considerably, we'd recommend leaving it out to dry completely before proceeding.
The boiling/cleaning/sanitizing procedures outlined above should be attempted by adults only, or under close adult supervision.

While this grade of Ghostwood is truly our favorite, our team has worked hard to source a new "Pet Shop Grade" of Ghostwood for those looking for a more affordable option similar in quality to what you might find elsewhere. NEHERP Grade Ghostwood (this item) is the best of the best, but we've done our best to ensure we've got an option for everyone.
