General Begonia Info
Begonia is a massive genus of plants containing over 1800 species and many man-made cultivars/hybrids. Most Begonias are widely distributed throughout tropical & subtropical environments in Central America, South America, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Islands. There is a tremendous degree of variation between species, and there's no easy way for us to summarize it all here while doing the complexity of the genre any justice. Check out Wikipedia's Begonia Pageext link for a good place to start, if you'd like to get into some of the details. There are a ton of beautiful Begonias available on the horticultural market, but the majority of those found in typical plant nurseries & garden centers are larger species which are best kept as ornamental houseplants. With that in mind, we always do our best to offer small & miniature species which are appropriate for terrariums.

Potted Plants:

Best Terrarium Plants For The Price Bare Rooted & Wrapped With ID
Plant nurseries roughly categorize their plants by pot size, and a plant is made available once it has mostly filled out it's container. Generally speaking, a 4in potted plant is roughly twice the size of a 3in pot, and a 3in potted plant is typically twice the size of a 2in pot. Needless to say, we do our best to offer big & healthy plants which were categorized honestly, and are representative of the photos we've got listed on the site. Every potted plant we sell is shipped bare root, and the root ball of the plant is carefully wrapped in paper towels before it's placed back into it's cleaned pot for shipping. From there, it's wrapped in clean brown packing paper and labeled with it's species before shipping.

Live Mats:

Healthy Background Plants For Terrariums How We Ship Live Mat Terrarium Plants
We're proud to offer a brand new way to order plants, and we're loving the results so far. Our Live Mats are grown with plenty of light & the ideal amount of moisture required to form a dense mat. Before shipping, each section is gently separated from it's sealed container, rinsed free of excess potting soil, and carefully placed in a partially inflated airtight bag. Depending on the specific plant, live mats can planted terrestrially or attached to a background to grow epiphytically. These are exceptionally dense portions of plants, so a little can go a long way!

Rooted Portions:

How We Ship Rooted Portions Of Terrarium Plants
Some plants we grow are offered in rooted portions, which are slightly smaller portions than would typically be included in a 3in pot. The length and overall portion size depends on the species being offered, but these do include a portion of the root system for easy planting & fast acclimation. When it comes time to ship, we'll carefully separate the portion from it's mother plant, rinse the roots free of potting soil, and carefully wrap the roots in a ball of moist paper towels. From there, the plant is wrapped in clean brown packing paper and labeled with it's species before shipping.

Clippings:

How We Ship Clippings For Terrarium Plants
Clippings are the smallest size portion of what we offer. Depending on the species, clippings may or may not include small attached roots. Plants we sell as clippings are typically epiphytic in nature, meaning they'll grow without soil on the surface of another plant (or wood decor, backgrounds, etc). The difficulty in planting clippings depends entirely on the species, so don't hesitate to ask before ordering if you are curious. When it comes time to ship, we carefully clean, wrap, and seal our clippings in partially filled bags to ensure the safest transit possible. Like everything else we sell, these are individually labeled with ID.

Begonia amphioxus

Begonia amphioxus For Terrariums, Begonia amphioxus Bioactive Terrarium Plant
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
This Begonia can look amazing in a terrarium environment once established. With electric green & red leaves, it's truly a beautiful little gem of a plant. We recommend growing these in enclosures only, as it's high humidity requirement becomes unforgiving below 60% R/H. We propagate and grow these in brighter-than-typical conditions for Begonias, and have found the color may fade a bit in more dim conditions. Transplant shock is extremely common with these plants, so patience is key after receiving them. Even if a few leaves curl/drop after repotting, staying vigilant with moisture & humidity usually rewards the grower with new growth after 2-3 weeks of acclimation. Use a fast-draining soil for best results, and never let the mix fully dry out. Not recommended for enclosures with conditions under 60% R/H or 70F.

A hard to find rhizomatous Begonia that thrives in higher humidity. Bright red coloration and stiff (not sharp) hairs run up the petioles of this plant, making it hard to miss. Begonia lichenora

Begonia lichenora For Terrariums, Begonia lichenora Bioactive Terrarium Plant
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
This is a rare Bornean species of miniature Begonia, with mature leaves measuring just under 1 inch. It's difficult to see in photos, but there can be a slightly blue sheen on healthy leaves. Recommended for terrariums only, and especially for those comfortable working with a particularly finnicky species. Transplant shock is common with lichenora, and we'd advise any future owners to expect a tough looking acclimation period at first. Once acclimated (2-5 weeks in good conditions), it's a relatively forgiving plant. We've planted this species on backgrounds and in terrarium substrate with solid results. That being said, we can't overstate the fickle nature of this species. (Not a good "First try" Begonia for inexperienced keepers!)

Begonia luzonensis

Begonia luzonensis For Terrariums, Begonia luzonensis Bioactive Terrarium Plant
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
A small-leaved Begonia native to it's namesake of Luzon in the Philippines. This terrarium appropriate species does well in warm & humid terrariums, and is easy to keep to a smaller size overall. Untrimmed, it typically tops-out around 12in. The beautifully patterned green leaves remain under 2in overall, with coloration varying greatly depending on conditions. The less intense gray/green hue of the lighter part of the leaves can become a brighter silvery green in some conditions.

Begonia rajah

Begonia rajah Begonia rajah
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
The pictures say it all. This is one of our favorite Begonias for terrariums, and it's slow growing & low-growing nature make it an awesome choice for a variety of enclosure styles. It's a rhizomatous species which rarely exceeds 6-7in in height. It's leaves can slowly grow to around 4in across, so be sure to allow it plenty of room to grow. The fragile leaves have a bumpy texture to them, and new growth is typically a brighter red color when grown in ideal conditions. This one requires especially quick draining soil, and shouldn't be allowed to stay wet for long. The flowers (fairly infrequent) are bright pink with a yellow center.

Begonia ulmifolia

Elm Leaf Begonia

Begonia ulmifolia For Terrariums, Elm Leaf Begonia Bioactive Terrarium Plant
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
This attractive tropical Begonia is native to humid areas of South America, and is surprisingly forgiving & easy to grow. This species seems more tolerant than some of the less common varieties we work with, and seems to flower more often too. For best results out of terrariums, keep humid and allow soil to dry slightly before watering. In a terrarium, these are usually a piece of cake to grow.

Saxifraga sarmentosa

Strawberry Begonia

Strawberry Begonia
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
This great looking plant is actually a member of the Saxifraga family, despite it's common "Begonia" name. A medium sized terrarium plant, Strawberry begonias sprout cascading plantlets that will root themselves and grow. Each plantlet can be cut & repotted to grow into another plant. If planted high in an enclosure, the plantlets will drape down towards the substrate for a great "overgrown" look. A very forgiving plant. The pictured plant is growing in a 4in pot.

Begonia Terrarium Plant Plant - Best Begonias For Terrariums
Images for illustrative purposes only. Your mix may vary, and could include plants not currently listed.
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
Our terrarium plant packs feature some of our best prices on assortments of high quality Begonias. They make an awesome sampler or starter plant pack for terrariums, vivariums, or even to start a collection. All plants in this assortment will be 3in pots, or well established rooted/rhizome portions of proportionate size. The plants we include are likely to be found on this page, and some may be listed in the "Sold Out/Reserved" section below. Unlisted terrarium appropriate varieties are less likely, but may be included depending on our availability. There will be no repeat species included in 3-5 packs, and we'll do our best to include a great looking variety. Duplicate species are likely if more than 7 plants are ordered. Only true Begonias will be sent. (No Saxifraga, etc) All NEHERP plant packs require a minimum average of 55% relative humidity.
Full disclosure: Sorry, but we can't afford to offer the rare ($25-$40+) varieties like Begonia amphioxus, Begonia pteridiformis, and Begonia rajah in these discount packs!
