Why we fed this article to the Frogs:

This article was originally written as a simplified version of Vivarium Lighting 101, and was hosted on our site between 2013 and late 2016. After our main Vivarium Lighting 101 article was re-written in December of 2016 with tons of new content, this old "basic" version just seemed a little too basic by comparison. We attempted to re-write it while keeping the topic lighter & simpler, but after careful consideration, we've decided to get rid of this particular page. The thing is, oversimplification can lead to enthusiasts getting the wrong impression, which isn't something we'd ever want. Instead, we present the following options, and we hope they help!

Option 1:
Vivarium Lighting Kits

Vivarium Lighting Kits

Hundreds of proven, enclosure-specific lighting solutions
Not really interested in learning the theory behind why we recommend certain lighting types for certain size enclosures? Or, maybe you are in a rush for time? Check out our lighting kits. It's all of the finished product, and none of the theory. Although the page says "lighting kits", there are also alternative lighting solutions under almost every enclosure's lighting kit. We provide as many examples of what we'd recommend as we can, so you won't just be stuck with a single option to choose from. :-)

The most comprehensive vivarium lighting article online
There's no easy way to simplify the topic of selecting a vivarium light source, without oversimplifying it, in our opinion. Believe us, we tried. In Vivarium Lighting 101, you'll learn about Lumens, Color Temperature, PAR light, the Inverse Square Law, and how each one is critically important when selecting a light source for your vivarium. If you'd like to learn the theory we use when determining whether a light source will be appropriate for a certain size of enclosure, this is the best place to start. :-)
